I haven't had good luck with Dairy Queen in Los Angeles. The ice cream has been too soft and too melted. I remember liking Dairy Queen as a kid so I was looking forward to trying one in Ohio (even though I have always preferred hand-scooped ice cream). I had a vanilla soft serve in a cake cone and they got it right. The ice cream was light, creamy and tasty (with the right temperature). I also noticed how the server dispensed the soft serve in a particular way so that it had that iconic Dairy Queen silhouette/form you see in the television commercials. I haven't had that good fortune in Los Angeles where the soft serve is just plopped into a cone with little care (resulting in a misshapen blob). This Dairy Queen (located right off the 23 on the way from Southern Ohio to Columbus, Ohio) is a lot different than what I remember. It used to be a very outdated spot--not really rundown but a little stuck in time. The bare bones and not glitzy decor reminded me a lot of the Nebraska Dairy Queen that Jack Nicholson visited in About Schmidt. This location is a lot more new now. It is very clean and much more commercial. They still serve regular food as well as desserts. They listed some local/regional only food options on the menu board. This Dairy Queen used to serve Mr. Misty drinks (a kind of slushi) that I don't see on the West Coast. The Mr. Misty drinks are now called Arctic Rush. You can get them just as a slushi or with ice cream (where they can be served like an ice cream float or you can have them blend the slushi with the ice cream). Service here was good and friendly. I like Dairy Queen. It is definitely a good spot for a soft serve treat where you can go very simple (a nice vanilla cone) to more elaborate (a banana split sundae). They also serve fast food if you are looking to make it a complete meal (though it has been a long time, I remember their food being pretty okay for fast food). Dairy Queens are everywhere, but they do vary in quality. In addition, several items are only available in certain regions. Therefore, even though you may hesitate stopping at this Dairy Queen because it is part of a big chain, this one is different and local enough to make it worth a stop. Parking is free in the huge lot that supports this Dairy Queen. FYI, I also noticed that they have a dessert happy hour here during certain times/days of the week.
